Choosing Baby Clothes

Choosing Baby Clothes
There's more to consider than how it looks...

So, you're expecting a baby and making all the necessary preparations for the arrival of your new family member. How do you go about choosing the clothes for your new little person? There's much more than "blue for a boy...pink for a girl...twice as much for twins" when it comes time to select clothes for your new baby. To avoid the potential pitfalls that ensnare many new parents there are a few things to keep in mind to help make the process as seamless as possible.

Comfort Over Cuteness

Too many parents get all gushy and sentimental when shopping for baby clothes. It's very easy to look at that little blue sailor suit or little pink petticoat and think to oneself "how cute will little Keanu or Britney look in this!" Consider however that your newborn's skin is very tender and quite sensitive. That cute little outfit could cause quite a bit of discomfort if it's made of the wrong materials, doesn't breathe easily, or is too constrictive. Clothes for a newborn should be soft, absorbent, and made of natural fibers. Think cotton. There will be plenty of time to embarrass your child by forcing her to wear clothes she hates when she's a teenager. For the time being, choose outfits that put the baby's comfort over all else.

Accessibility

One point that some parents seem to forget when selecting baby clothes is that they will need to be changed... often. Infant wear with too many buttons, straps, and fasteners can quickly become troublesome as the item needs to be undone and redone again and again to allow access for diaper changing or removing and replacing the entire outfit due to soiling of some kind. Remember that babies are messy little people and that you and your partner are going to be the ones cleaning up those messes, in one way or another, for the next eighteen to twenty years. Make it easy on yourselves now while the child and the messes are still small.

Ease of Care

A very important consideration in baby clothing is ease of care. Always look at the care labels while you're still in the store and make sure that the item is machine washable and doesn't have any special restrictions regarding detergents, bleaches, or fabric softeners. You're not likely to come across any baby clothing that requires dry cleaning, but you always want to be sure. Cotton is definitely the fabric of choice for baby clothing for the reasons mentioned above, but cotton does have a nasty tendency to shrink when washed in hot water. Your baby will outgrow her clothes quickly enough, so items that contain a blend of cotton and other, non-shrinking, fibers may be acceptable. Make sure that the cotton to poly ratio is weighted in cotton's favor and you should still be all right in terms of comfort while ensuring that little Paris will be able to get into her duds for as long as possible.

Fashionable Clothing That You Choose

 by: Mike Yeager

Clothing encompasses a wide range of apparel. From big and tall men’s clothing to women’s clothing. How we dress ourselves and what we wear tells the people around us a lot about who we are. Clothing has always been subject to change based on the dictates of fashion and whims.

Some things however, about clothing don’t change. Quality. Quality clothing will always be in demand. Durability. Durable men’s and women’s clothing are always popular.

Clothing not only covers our bodies, it also allows us to enhance our appearance. A quality, sharp suit on a man makes him look more professional and successful. An attractive dress on a woman makes her look stylish and confident.

There are so many different clothing options to choose from, that at times it can appear overwhelming. Don’t let that bother you. With a little thought and reflection you can come up with a clothing style that truly reflects who you are.

A few suggestions to consider are these: Decide what clothing you feel comfortable in. Is it a business meeting? Is it a casual night out? Whatever you’re going to be doing, the clothes you wear will only accentuate the real you and the right clothes for the occasion can go a long way to help you feel confident.

Take your time to select a few choice merchants that offer timeless, quality clothing at reasonable prices. Take your time, you’re not in a hurry, and focus in on what type of clothing you want. In other words, who do you want to be and then find the clothes to dress up that person.

Handbags, Purses and Toolboxes, Oh My!

 by: David Leonhardt

Never send a man to do a woman's job. You'd think I would have figured that out by now, but I haven't made my quota of mistakes just yet.

Somehow I got it into my head to buy my friend a handbag. It seemed simple enough. I've never had a problem buying toolboxes, cabinets or file folders, so how hard would it be to pick up a handbag?

"I would like to buy a handbag for a friend, please."

"What kind of handbag," the smiling sales lady asked helpfully.

"Uh...one that carries stuff in it, I suppose. Is there any other kind?"

"There are very many kinds," SalesLady enthused. "There is at least one for every occasion and several for every personality. What is your friend like?"

I tried to think. Unfortunately, the only thought that wandered into my cerebrum was that maybe I should go across the street to the hardware store and just buy her a sturdy 205-piece socket set on sale for $74.99.

"Is she a bit wild?" SalesLady probed. "If so, we have these exciting leopard print handbags. They are perfect for howling out on the town."

I tried to picture a leopard wandering into the bookshop café. "I don't think 'wild' quite describes her."

"Ah. Well these corset bags are not quite as wild," SalesLady offered.

I blushed at the site. "That might be a bit too stylish for her. She's more...uh..."

"...conservative!" SalesLady piped in. "Here are some classic handbags, for more conservative tastes."

I looked at the bags. "I don't know. These look kind of boring to me."

SalesLady was taken aback. "Boring? These are for professionals. They say your friend has arrived. They say she is climbing the corporate ladder. They say, 'I am somebody.' Would you call Bill Gates boring? Would you call Donald Trump boring?"

"Donald Trump wears one of these?"

The look on SalesLady's face said just one thing: "Men!"

"I don't think my friend is much of a professional corporate type. She's more casual."

"Casual? We can do casual," SalesLady assured me. "Check out these suede handbags. Feel that texture. Soft as a baby's bottom."

"Hey, they are soft. They'd be great for pillow fights."

Oops. SalesLady was taken aback again. "Ladies do not engage in pillow fights."

I considered the suede handbags for a moment. "I think my friend might like something a little more trendy. Do you have anything trendy?"

"Trendy? You want trendy? We have lots of trendy!" SalesLady got all excited. "How about this very popular high heel shoe handbag?" she offered.

I had to admit it was original. And trendy. But I wasn't sure about giving my friend a bag she could kick me with.

I turned it over a few times. "Where's the peanut butter?"

SalesLady snapped the bag back and handed me another. "Your friend will love these Initial bags," she said, showing me several bags with a single classy letter affixed to each. I considered how many bags my friend would have to carry to spell "Help, my dorky friend bought me too many handbags." I asked what else she could show me.

She brought out a handbag covered with lip prints. My eyes opened wide. "Wow. How come a handbag gets all the puckers?"

"They are not real," SalesLady assured me.

"It's still better than I've ever gotten."

SalesLady mercifully ignored my comment. "How about these vinyl horoscope handbags?"

"Now you're talking! My friend loves horoscopes."

SalesLady looked relieved.

"But..."

"I know," SalesLady interrupted "She can find her horoscope in the newspaper. Let's try something else. How about these little evening handbags?"

I looked at the tiny purses. "They are cute, but they don't have much room to carry, say, a chainsaw."

An hour later...

The sales clerk at the hardware store rang up my purchase. "That'll be $29," she said.

I handed her the money. "Thank you," I smiled. "I thought about getting the 205-piece socket set for my friend, but I know she will love this new handbag."

"Handbag?" asked the confused clerk staring at the toolbox in my hand.

"Yes. And if she doesn't, at least she can't kick me with it."
